It might have been a Saturday afternoon in the city, the kind where the street suddenly becomes a stage. A couple steps into the open air and begins to dance — not for an audience, but because the music demanded it. Around them, the world softens: a little girl in pink watches with wide, quiet attention; bystanders pause mid-step; the buildings and storefronts dissolve into streaks of light and color. For this one moment, everything orbits around them. Nancy Cicchetti began this painting, as she begins all her work, with a photograph — a single captured instant that held something she needed to understand. Then the transformation began. She deepened the blur at the edges, sharpened the red of the dress, let the crowd blur into a chorus of impressionistic forms. The child at the center becomes the painting's conscience — innocent, still, witnessing something she may not yet have words for.
