Blue Sphere with Burning Core

Nandi Makala grew up holding multiple worlds inside her at once — Paris and the Congo, Ivory Coast and the Southwest of France, thread and pigment and fire and earth. This painting is what happens when those worlds stop negotiating and simply become. The great blue sphere arrived, she has said, not from planning but from listening — to the paint, to the surface, to whatever insists on being made. At the center of all that blue, three points of orange and rust glow like memories that refuse to cool. They are seeds, or stars, or wounds that became portals. The cerulean passages that surround them feel oceanic and cosmic simultaneously — as though the painting cannot decide whether it is looking outward to the universe or inward to the body, and has wisely chosen not to. The circular boundary contains everything without constraining it. It is the form of wholeness, of cycles, of origins that loop back to themselves. This is a painting about resilience — Makala's third great theme — rendered not as struggle but as luminosity. The fire does not destroy the blue. It lives inside it, permanent and fierce, the way certain memories live inside a person: not erased by time, but made more essential by it.
