Blushing Beauties

Somewhere in a Northern California garden — perhaps a friend's yard in Marin, the kind of place Nanette Biers has painted many times — the afternoon sun found a cluster of roses and everything else fell away into shadow. She set up quickly, the way plein-air painters must, knowing the light would shift and the moment would be gone. The peach blooms glowed against the darkness of the hedge behind them, and the scattered crimson buds told you the whole garden was quietly alive around them. What she captured is not just flowers but the feeling of standing in that garden at that hour — the warmth on your face, the contrast between brilliance and shade, the way a well-tended rose can make the world feel generous. The loose, confident brushwork does what Nanette always asks of herself: suggest rather than render, simplify rather than catalogue, trust the eye to fill in what the hand deliberately leaves out. The result is a painting that holds a piece of time — a specific quality of California garden light that anyone who has stood among roses in the late afternoon will recognize instantly and feel in their chest.
