Harvest Moon, Drake's Beach

This is Nanette Biers at her most commanding — a full harvest moon igniting the California coast in a blaze of mauve, gold, and luminous violet. The cliffs at Drakes Beach glow like embers, their terracotta faces catching the last warmth of the rising moon while the water below mirrors that golden disc in shimmering strokes of yellow and steel blue. Every brushmark pulses with the urgency of a painter racing the fleeting light — loose, decisive, alive. This is precisely the kind of work that defines Biers's reputation in the California plein-air tradition: a composition bold enough to anchor a room, yet intimate enough to feel like a private moment shared between painter and coastline. The chromatic range here — from warm ochre rock to cool lavender sky — demonstrates the mastery of outdoor color observation that separates field painters from studio mimics. Collectors who follow the California Art Club circuit and the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association will immediately recognize the authority in this piece. Moonrise seascapes of this caliber, rooted in the lineage of Sorolla and Edgar Payne yet unmistakably contemporary, are rare on the secondary market and rarer still in this condition of atmospheric completeness. This is a statement acquisition for any collection serious about the living tradition of California Impressionism.
