Reflecting Pond

This is Nanette Biers at her most instinctive and alive — two great egrets caught mid-hunt in a sun-dappled wetland, their luminous white forms blazing against a swirling backdrop of olive, umber, and reed gold. The brushwork crackles with the urgency of the plein-air moment: every stroke of the water, every flicker of reflected sky, carries the weight of a painter who knows that the bird will move, the light will shift, and hesitation means losing it all. This is California wildlife painting at its most immediate and electric. The reflections alone are a masterclass — broken planes of blue, green, and white ripple beneath the dominant egret, doubling the composition's drama without doubling its effort. Biers deploys her signature economy of means: suggest, don't render. The result is a canvas that breathes and shimmers, drawing the eye in a continuous loop between bird, bank, and mirrored water. For the discerning collector, this piece represents exactly the kind of work that holds and appreciates — a recognisable Californian subject handled with the loose authority of the great plein-air tradition, by an LPAPA member artist with a growing national exhibition record. Hang it and every viewer will lean in.
