Becoming Clowness

As a child in Moscow, Olesya Volk pressed her face close to the bark of trees and read the markings there like pages of a forgotten book. Decades later, that childhood ritual is still the engine of her art. This painting begins where the tree begins — in the living grain of the wooden panel beneath — and rises upward through glazed veils of rose and gold until the bark speaks back in figures: a crowned spirit drifting at the upper left, a gathering of silent watchers in the centre, small masked faces tucked into the lower folds like marginalia in an illuminated manuscript. They were always there. The artist simply learned to see them. The mood is neither frightening nor fully comforting — it occupies the tender, suspended space of a fairy tale's turning point, the moment before the enchantment resolves. The palette of blush mauve, warm amber, and cool lavender recalls the interior light of a forest just before dusk, when the world seems briefly legible. These beings do not demand anything of the viewer; they simply gaze, patient and ancient, as if they have been waiting to be noticed for centuries. In Volk's cosmology, this is a conversation — a mirror dialogue between the human mind's hunger for meaning and the natural world's inexhaustible capacity to offer it. The painting is an act of listening made visible, a record of one extraordinary moment when the Language of Birds almost became audible.
