Cabin Tree

She began, as she always does, by reading the tree. Standing before a pale birch, Olesya Volk did not see bark — she saw a manuscript. There, in the silvered folds and knots, a face emerged: dark-eyed, serene, watching. Below it, smaller figures clustered like attendants or memories, caught mid-transformation between animal and human. The tree was telling its story, and the artist was its faithful scribe. Behind the trunk, half-dissolved in a cool morning haze, a wooden house slumps and sighs — the kind of structure that exists equally in fairy tales and in the forgotten countryside of a Russian childhood. A white chimney rises like a candle. The world beyond the bark is quieter, older, almost surrendered to forgetting. The tree is the only thing still fully awake, still fully alive, still speaking. This is the emotional core of Volk's practice: the moment just before the language of nature becomes fully legible — the held breath of almost understanding. The viewer stands at the threshold between the human world and something far older, invited to lean in, to look closer, to decode the alphabet written in wood and silence and time.
