Resurrection

She holds two crosses — one in each raised hand — and from them hang the red threads of everything. Below her, a world is being born or perhaps unravelled: animals stumble into being, spirits crowd the margins, creatures peer out from bark and shadow as if they have always been waiting there, just beneath the surface of things. The nude woman is no victim. She is the maker. She is the Golem's soul, the marionette who discovered she holds the strings. To her left, a bearded man watches. He wears a kippah, his coat the deep teal of a scholar's robe, his expression caught between wonder and something older — recognition, perhaps. He does not reach for the threads. He only witnesses. This is the ancient dialogue Volk has painted throughout her life: the one who reads the bark, and the bark that reads back. The background is not empty space but living text. Owls cluster in the upper reaches like letters in an alphabet only the trees know. Faces emerge from the ochre and ash of the panel's grain, watching the central encounter with the patience of things that have always existed just outside of language. The red thread falls and falls, and somewhere at the bottom of the painting, among the foxes and the blue birds and the half-human creatures of the threshold, it pools — the cost, perhaps, of bringing a world to life.
