Tree of Puppets

There is a tree in Pasadena — or perhaps in a dream of Pasadena — that has been standing long enough to absorb everything. Every argument held in its shade, every child who pressed a cheek to its bark, every night it spent alone with the city humming behind it. Olesya Volk looked into that bark and the bark looked back, and what emerged between them is this painting: a great blue spirit, patient and slightly smiling, rising from the texture of wood as if it had always been there, waiting for the right pair of eyes. The faces are everywhere once you begin to see them. They cluster in the ridges and knots of the bark — pale ovals, sleeping eyes, mouths mid-breath — a silent congregation hosted inside the tree's body. The spirit at the center holds them all, arms folded into its own form like a guardian who has long since made peace with the weight of what it carries. Behind it, the red wall of a building glows with the particular warmth of the waking world, a window like a small eye watching back. Two realms — the mythic and the mundane — lean into each other without collision. This is the artist's deepest practice made visible: the belief that nature speaks in a language older than words, and that if you are willing to sit with a tree long enough, it will tell you everything. Volk has not invented this spirit. She has simply been patient enough to translate it.
