Douglas Iris, Ring Mountain

This is not a flower photograph — it is an encounter. Rob Badger, recipient of the 2020 Sierra Club Ansel Adams Award, pulls the viewer into the intimate architecture of a wild iris with the confidence of fifty years behind the lens. The curving green blades slice across the frame like brushstrokes, framing luminous violet petals that pulse with saturated life against a diffused, glowing background. It is simultaneously abstract and achingly real — a collision of botanical precision and pure visual sensation. For the discerning collector, this image occupies rare territory: the formal elegance of fine-art floral photography married to the urgency of environmental documentary work. Every element — the shallow depth of field, the arcing leaf geometry, the jewel-toned petals — has been orchestrated with the mastery that has earned Badger placement in the California State Building, the James Irvine Foundation, and the collections of Kaiser Permanente and Sutter Health. This is a work that holds its own on a gallery wall and rewards years of looking. Part of Badger's celebrated Beauty and the Beast: California Wildflowers and Climate Change series — a project seen by more than 44,000 visitors — this print carries cultural weight well beyond its aesthetic power. Acquire it as a singular statement piece, a conversation-starter, and a lasting investment in one of the American West's most important conservation photography legacies.
