Satchmo ~ Louis Armstrong

This is Sherri Lynn Carroll firing on all cylinders — a monochromatic tour de force that crackles with life, soul, and raw musical electricity. Louis Armstrong emerges from the black of night, his eyes wide and luminous, lips locked to his trumpet as if he could blow the stars right out of the sky. The full moon hangs behind him like a spotlight the universe placed there on purpose, and every gleaming valve, every fold of his white pocket square, every line etched into his joyful face is rendered with the photorealistic precision that Sherri has honed since her watercolor days in 1990. The restraint of a pure black-and-white palette is a bold artistic statement — where Sherri's signature work blazes with tropical color, here she strips everything down to contrast and light, and the result is even more arresting. The trumpet bell catches light like liquid mercury, the stars are sharp pinpricks of hope, and Satchmo's expression communicates more joy in a single glance than most paintings manage in their entirety. This is a painting that sings. For collectors of jazz art, celebrity portraiture, or simply exceptional figurative painting, this piece is a rare find — a museum-quality work by an artist with more than two decades of professional studio and mural practice. It holds its own on any wall, in any room, and it will still be stopping people mid-step thirty years from now.
