This is sunshine made physical — a 36×48 inch explosion of golden yellows, burning ochres and slashing whites that commands any wall it touches. Wessells works the canvas with palette knives in the tradition of the great mid-century abstractionists, and every mark here carries that same muscular confidence: thick ridges of pigment catch the light, raw passages breathe between strokes, and the whole surface vibrates with the kind of warmth that makes a room feel alive. This is not decoration. It is presence. The scale alone earns this piece a place in serious collections, but it is the restraint within the energy that elevates it. Against the sun-drenched field of gold, Wessells drops cool bursts of blue-grey and white like shadows crossing an open hillside — tension and release held in perfect balance. That push-pull is the hallmark of an artist who spent years building compositions for the camera before he ever picked up a knife, and it shows in every decision on this canvas. Abstract works rooted in lived memory and executed with this level of physical commitment are exactly what the contemporary art market rewards. Whether placed above a statement sofa, anchoring a corporate lobby, or commanding a collector's primary wall, this painting delivers outsized impact at a scale that prints simply cannot replicate.
