Darksome Hollows

This is raw, sleepless energy made permanent — a 48 x 60 inch explosion of scraped acrylic and palette-knife fury that commands every wall it touches. Created over three consecutive insomniac nights in Spring 2017, 'Darksome Hollows' was built entirely without brushes: a 12-inch scraper and palette knives were the only weapons, slashing crimson through avalanches of white and charcoal in jutting, layered collisions that pulse with kinetic force. The result is a painting you feel before you fully see it — dramatic, restless, and completely alive. The scale alone sets it apart. At five feet wide and four feet tall, this framed canvas dominates a room the way a Pollock dominates a gallery — unapologetically large, unapologetically loud. The textured surface catches light differently at every hour, shifting the mood from turbulent to quietly menacing as shadows move across the ridges and hollows carved by the scraper. Every slash of red bleeds through like something urgent surfacing from beneath. For the discerning collector, 'Darksome Hollows' represents exactly the kind of work that rewards long-term ownership: a documented early Wessells original, painted at a pivotal moment before his formal training accelerated his ambition, carrying the unfiltered honesty of a self-taught instinct in full flight. This piece is not decoration — it is a statement. It belongs on the wall of someone who understands that great abstract work doesn't ask for your attention; it takes it.
