Shades of Grey

Stephen grew up in a household on the Stanford campus where making things was simply what you did. Decades later, standing in his Las Vegas studio in front of a blank 60-inch canvas, that childhood instinct still guides the first mark — not a plan, but a feeling. With 'Shades of Grey,' the story began in black: thick, poured, gestural shapes that moved across the cream surface the way thoughts move through a quiet mind — loose, wandering, occasionally tangling into one another before breaking free again. At some point in the making, blue arrived. Not announced, not planned — just present, the way a memory surfaces mid-afternoon. Pale periwinkle and cool lavender pooled inside the dark forms like windows, like held breath, like the sky glimpsed through the canopy of something dense and shadowed. Those blues are the emotional core of the painting: they are the relief inside the weight, the light that lives at the center of every difficult thing. The title nods to nuance — to the space between black and white where most of life actually happens. For Stephen, painting has always been therapy, a way of processing the modern world at a scale too large to ignore. 'Shades of Grey' is an invitation to sit with that complexity, to find your own story in its forms, and to let the canvas do what a good painting always does: make a dull wall — and a distracted mind — come fully, quietly alive.
