Natural Landscape 21

There is a particular quality of light in the American Southwest — fierce, clarifying, almost mythological — that strips a landscape down to its essential architecture. Sue Averell found it in the red rock country, where sandstone mesas rise from the desert floor like monuments to geological patience, and where the sky turns a shade of blue so deep it feels like a second earth pressing down from above. Standing before this mesa, palette knife loaded with paint, she did what she has always done: she listened to what the landscape was telling her and answered in the language she knows best — thick, physical, unapologetic paint. The rock becomes something more than rock in her hands. Each stratum is a conversation between colour and time — the warm golds of sun-baked surfaces, the cooler pinks in shadow, the dark burgundy of iron-stained cliffs. The scrubby trees clinging to the ledges and spilling across the foreground are painted with the same urgency as the stone, dark and tenacious, insisting on life in an austere place. Above it all, cumulus clouds billow in heavy, sculptural relief against that impossible blue, moving through the composition with the unhurried certainty of the landscape itself. This painting carries the accumulated knowledge of an artist who has painted urban streets in San Francisco, tropical botanicals in Thailand, and sweeping natural landscapes across the American West — all of it distilled into a single, physical encounter with stone, sky, and light. It is a painting about endurance: the endurance of the land, and the endurance of the painter's commitment to finding beauty in the world as it is.
