Urban Landscape 217

There is a particular silence that settles over desert rock — the silence of deep time, of stone that has absorbed ten thousand summers and has nothing left to prove. Sue Averell found that silence and painted it into something you can feel in your chest. The great sandstone formation at the heart of this canvas was not sketched lightly; it was built, press by press, with palette knife and brush, the acrylic and polymer medium accumulating into something almost geological in its own right. The rock and the painting share a kind of stubbornness — an insistence on being exactly what they are. Averell grew up in Southern California and has spent her adult life reading landscapes — the urban canyons of San Francisco, the lush greens of Thailand, and the wide-open skies of the American Southwest. Here she distills that lifetime of looking into a single, luminous afternoon: clouds drifting without urgency, scrubby trees holding their ground at the edges, and at the center, the rock — warm, scarred, permanent. The ground beneath is a mosaic of earthy strokes, recalling both the tiled rooftops of her urban paintings and the cracked clay of a desert wash. To stand before this painting is to be reminded that some things endure. In a career defined by evolution — from city streets to botanicals, from flat canvas to three-dimensional steel and ceramic towers — Averell returns again and again to landscapes that carry weight. This is one of them.
