Botanical 228

There is a moment in high summer when a garden simply overflows — when the blooms are too many, the colours too insistent, the whole living abundance of it impossible to contain. Sue Averell has painted that moment. From her studio inside Gallery Sausalito, where the light off the Bay fills the space, she built this bouquet stroke by stroke, layer by layer, pressing vivid blues and dark reds into the canvas until the flowers seemed to breathe on their own. The cherries that scatter across the foreground feel less like still life props and more like the garden spilling joyfully beyond its own borders. The glass vase at the heart of the composition holds everything together — and lets it go at the same time. Through its transparent walls you can see stems and water and refracted colour, painted with the fluid, calligraphic lines that trace back to Averell's early years in illustration. It is the still point around which the whole exuberant scene revolves, a quiet clarity inside the storm of petal and leaf. Born in Ohio, shaped by Southern California, and rooted now in the artistic community of Sausalito, Averell has always painted the world as a place of colour and vitality. This botanical work carries all of that history — the urban energy of her San Francisco years, the lush abundance she encountered in Thailand, the bold graphic sensibility of Art Center — distilled into one radiant, generous, unforgettable bouquet.
