Botanical 231

There's a moment in every San Francisco Bay Area summer when someone sets a wildly overstuffed bunch of flowers on a table and the whole room changes. That is the moment Sue Averell has captured here — not photographed, not merely recorded, but felt and rebuilt stroke by deliberate stroke. The blooms overflow their glass vessel the way a good conversation overflows its allotted time: generously, without apology. Each flower variety has its own personality, its own cadence of marks, and together they form something that feels less like a still life and more like a gathering. The clear glass vase is quietly radical. Where another painter might have chosen ceramic or silver, Sue chose transparency, letting us see the tangle of stems beneath the water — a reminder that beauty has roots, that abundance requires structure. The warm bronze tabletop with its fluid, almost poured quality grounds the entire composition in something earthy and real, while the scattered orange-red flecks feel like the painter's own heartbeat made visible, the energy that wouldn't quite be contained. Sue has been painting botanicals since her early North Beach Gallery days, and this work carries all of that accumulated intimacy with the subject — the knowing way she renders a petal in a single loaded-brush stroke, the confidence with which she places one cool blue berry cluster against a warm pink backdrop. This is a painting that rewards living with it: each viewing reveals another flower you hadn't noticed, another layer of texture that catches the afternoon light differently than it did that morning.
