Natural Landscape 22

Stand at the edge of the desert floor and feel the moment before everything changes. The canyon walls have been here for millions of years — layered in rust, blush, cream and deep plum shadow — and they will be here long after the storm gathering overhead has passed through. Sue Averell has caught that precise, charged instant: the light still warm on the rock faces, the sage scrub still and waiting, the clouds piling up into the blue like something enormous gathering its thoughts. There is a particular quality of silence that belongs to the American Southwest, and Averell has pressed it into the paint itself. The thick, ridged surface of the canyon walls holds light the way the real stone does — catching it here, throwing shadow there, pulling the eye deeper into the cleft between the formations. She has always painted the energy of a place, from San Francisco streets to Thai markets to granite murals in India, and that same attentiveness to the living pulse of a landscape is fully present here: this canyon breathes. For anyone who has stood in red rock country and felt simultaneously very small and very alive, this painting will bring that feeling back completely. And for anyone who has not yet made that journey, Averell gives it to you whole — the scale, the colour, the weather, the silence, the ancient patience of stone.
